| Ghost,
All of these businesses would go out of business if they didn't keep coming out with new editions and making everyone re-up their collection. They can only print so many splat books before it becomes crazy. WizKids did something right when they came out with 3rd ed: It only took a few tweaks to convert 2nd ed material to 3rd. 3rd to 4th aren't compatible at all.
We will see what 5th ed brings. But frankly I personally dont have the spare funds to blow on another game library in the hopes of maybe playing it. Which is why I still play 3rd ed.

| The announcement makes it look like 5th will be to 4th as 3rd was to second. That is to say, it will be an upgrade, bringing together the rules and equipment which has grown through the extra books they've published, and finally codifying the extras. Hopefully, that will also give them a chance to answer some of the long-unanswered questions which have plagued GMs and players since 4th came out!
But, that's just what the announcement looks like. It could be a totally new ruleset, like 4th was.

| I agree with MisterBook.
While buying a new set of books won't be cheap, I'll hold my judgement until after seeing the changes. Just as long as they don't go the route of D&D 4 I'll hop on the wagon.

| Wow! I couldn't agree more! D&D 4 was a train-wreck!!! New rules, like in SR4, will be ok. But, as you said, let's all cross our fingers that they preserve the integrity of the franchise. It's had a good run (umm... pun intended...), let's not spoil it now! | |

| Yeah, as a long time gamer of all types I was really disappointed that D&D got handed over to the WoW crowed. If I wanted to play WoW I would have an account. I understand that they were looking to expand the market, but they mostly lost their original base market. Which is usually a bad thing. I was pretty skeptical when 3rd first came out too, but once they started releasing more character development options I fell for it.
SR could definitely use some sprucing up, some bolt tightening and what not. Even making drastic game play changes like from 3rd to 4th are fine, so long as Gala said, they keep the core franchise solid.
I wonder what the year will be. 2076? 2080?
That is one thing I've always liked about the new editions, they build on the old stuff by bringing it forward a few years in time. I'm sure the Ares Predator V will be the go to pistol that the previous incarnations were. Although, with Gun Heaven 2, my new favorite is the Browning Mega Power. it doesn't look as sleek, but it is awesome!

| Lots of fond memories of AD&D 2nd. I've caused DMs to ban certain races from their games before. My fault really. Our entire gaming group would sit around to think up ways to try and kill my PC. In the end, he did it to himself. Got to love those crit fumbles.
I always thought that the World of Darkness should have been a better game system. Maybe it wasn't the system, just the players it attracted that always kept me from getting into it.
Heh, this has totally gotten off topic now. I'll stop here.

| Kinda hope that 5th isn't such a huge change already. 4th hasn't been out long compared to how long 3rd was. That said I gotta admit they've been seriously cranking out the books lately and it's nice to see the setting getting some considerable love. A refinement of the 4th ed though wouldn't be uncalled for though, and doing a 5th ed could just be their way of giving the game a 'clean slate' again and putting the game more in line with what they had initially envisioned for 4th ed now that they've had the time to iron out many of the bugs (Or at least, integrate them more fully into Ares) | |

| Looks like the core remains the same so shouldn't be a crazy change then.
Does look increasingly like SR5 will just be basically a whole rule overhaul of SR4 taking into account the various game play issues they've had with SR4 and SR4A and probably tie in some of the oodles of optional material they dropped in along the way, which I'd be fine with. Hopefully they will also be clarifying the way certain mechanics are intended to work a little more as well.
If they stick to the standard though SR5 should be 2075 or so I think.
SR1 was 2050, SR2 I think was 2055, SR3 was 2060, Material converting SR3-SR4 was 2065, SR4 was 2070
Right now if you follow the timeline increase from the SR4 books we are sitting in 2072-2073.
SR3 goes right up to 2065 with the last 3rd ed book being printed and then SR4 came out picking up the date at 2070.
I could also be wrong about SR2 as that may start around 2054 as, going by a master list of SR books 2054 was the year the last SR1 book covered.

| I think you are probably correct about the time line. I think it helps keep continuity to the story line. Especially if they keep the time jumps short.
Although, I'm pretty sure that we'll see the same parsing of materials that we've seen in the past. The guns in the main book will likely have an Ares Pred V. But I imagine that move-by-wire will still be held in reserve for the new augmentation supplement and bio drones will be help for the new rigger stuff.

| I'm really looking forward to what they do with biodrones. They were a novel idea, and there is a lot that can be done with them!
There is going to have to be a huge overhaul for some of the SOTA of SR5, considering micro-attack drones (a thing, theoretically, of the extreme-distant future) is already in testing with the US Military as we speak. So they'll have to come up with some new ideas, and extrapolate those forward 60 years... It will be interesting to see where they go!

true, but i think that these 2 games are already made to accompany SR5 release, so they will be more similar to SR5 then SR4, meaning - hacking will be called decking, and all the other changes we see there will also be implemented. naturally there are some game elements that will defiantly not be in the RPG and vice verse.

| According to their original release information, they were setting it in 2055 (hence the "decking" style term usage) but using the 4th ed rule set. After the SR5 release notification I wondered if that last part would change, but I've not read anything saying so.
I agree though, it makes sense that they would try to keep it closer to the 5th ed rules rather than 4th. But if they are fairly far into production they may not want to make that change as it could effect the game engine design.

| Odds are if they've put this much work into using 4th they will probably keep it that way and possibly patch in changes later if it isn't too complicated. | |
