Who said running the shadows was easy? Dodging bullets, swords, spirits, and spells just to name a few. Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, even the occasional Dragon can make any Shadowrun go bad.

Appearence: A young Chinese man of medium-small build, Tao conceals an impressively developed physique under a loose armor jacket. The jacket is rather unusual, being cut to resemble a changshan- a type of traditional Quing Dynasty clothing. He has a head of black hair worn long enough to be messy, and has a wild glint in his eye that enlivens an otherwise generally calm expression.

Background: Tao Pai Pai comes from a highly traditional Chinese family. For centuries, they have been the caretakers of the Tao family style of Xingyiquan kung fu. In an arrangement common to many older styles of Chinese martial arts, mastery of the school passed from father to son for generations, encompassing an entire education of related skills that went far beyond unarmed combat: mastery of the sword, saber, staff and spear, hidden throwing weapons, traditional Chinese herbal medicine, acupressure, and bonesetting, calligraphy, and a unifying philosophy that ties the whole entire course of study with theory rooted deeply in Taoist doctrine. As direct descendants of Tao Li Zheng and caretakers of his family style of Xingyiquan, they are reguarded as National Treasures of the magocratic Chinese splinter state of Sichuan. Fully half of the family, and virtually all of its politically important members, is Awakened, in one of the most strongly heritable adept lineages in the world. Tao Pai Pai was the eldest son of the family's patriarch, Tao Yuen Chiu, and was trained intensively in the family's style as soon as he was old enough to walk; despite displaying a great deal of mundane talent, he failed to show the slightest inkling of adept powers, and his father soon came to reguard him as a failure. Unwilling to suffer the loss of face that came with having had an heir without the slightest bit of magical talent, Yuen intensified his son's training without mercy. He demanded hours of sparring with live blades, thousands of repetitions of incredibly difficult exercises, and increasingly expirimental and painful herbal medicines to strengthen bone and sinew. Finally, the stress became too much for the boy, and he wearily stumbled directly into the path of one of his father's spear thrusts, suffering massive loss of blood and a collapsed lung, as well as extensive spinal damage. His family's standing in the Sichuan government allowed swift access to medical care that saved Tao's life, rebuilding his broken body over with clonal transplants. The long months of painful and difficult recovery from the surgery were the final straw for the young Tao Pai Pai, already stressed to the breaking point by his father's emotional distance and utter neglect for anything but his training, and he ran away from home three hours after being given a clean bill of health. Sensing that he would need to flee very fast and very far to escape his father's agents, Tao has gone to ground as far from China as he could, in the underworld of Seattle. There are few legitimate occupations available there to one of his skills, and none at all that would fail to draw his father's attention- and so he turns to the shadows...

[A note on the nature of the Enemy and Sensei qualities- Tao's father does not actually wish to kill him. His goals are first to capture and return him to the family home for... reducation... and secondly to test and further develop his skills in kung fu, without a great deal of reguard for his safety. He'll never opt for a bullet to the brainpan where he has the option to send a dozen high-kicking ninjas, and is generally there to provide cheesy kung-fu movie action and drama. Suggested courses of action include:
Sending a beloved younger sibling with less physical ability and raw skill but powerful adept mojo with instructions to kill Pai for the dishonor he has brought to the family name
Taking a precious item or person and putting it at the top of a pagoda with each floor guarded by increasingly adept martial masters, overseeeing the top floor personally
Issuing challenges or deadly insults to local martial arts organizations on his son's behalf
The Sensei background isn't rendered useless by the nature of their relationship- if Tao approaches his father, bowing and scraping and admitting his skills are inadequate, he'll be welcomed back with open arms. However, it does mean that the training is likely to be intense enough to be hazardous to his health, and that he'll have to escape again when he's done. :-) ]

Unwilling to suffer the loss of face that came with having had a son without magical talent, he had Tao implanted with a suite of enhancements designed to mimic natural adept abilities. The long months of painful and difficult recovery from the surgery were the final straw for the young Tao, already stressed to the breaking point by his father's emotional distance and utter neglect for anything but his training, and he ran away from home three hours after being given a clean bill of health.
