Recently, I began the process of creating my first hackerish type of character. As I went on, the concept for the character changed a bit. At the end of it all, I am aiming for what I call a "Security Consultant". The basic idea is an ex-military/covert ops member who specialized in stealthy infiltrations and data/intelligence theft. His training also involved hacking and matrix intrusions, breaking and entering tactics as well as extensive knowledge of security systems and how to defeat them. I am playing in a high-level campaign and the GM has allowed us to use 500 BPs to start. Please fill me in on any redundancies or gaps in this build or if you have any other comments regarding its setup! Charops welcome Smile/

----With this concept in mind, what knowledge skills would be useful (im running out of ideas lol)? Also, I know that I will need Restricted Gear and to purchase some fake SINs and licenses. Since this character has a criminal SIN registered, my idea was to have him posess a high rated fake SIN under the name Charles Finley. With this fake ID, the character has created himself a new "legit" life and owns his own security consulting firm, Vandalay Security Corporation. As part of his job, "Finley" routinely tests his clients security, thus this corporate ID will be the name he has all the licenses required for his weapons and burglary/hacking tools and programs (except the F rated ones of course). This would be the cover story he would use if law enforcement or megacorps ever took interest or caught him. His real identity (with the military background) was compromised when he was setup in his past. Any thoughts?

Here is a prelimary bio of Lennie Mitnick aka Link (Sorry for the length, I got a little carried away with this one lol)

Lennie Mitnick was a typical human child of the 21st century. His parents were killed by gangers in Seattle and he became a ward of the state, UCAS. As he grew older, his instincts were honed in the Seattle youth homes, where because of his skinny, small frame, he was constantly preyed on by the older, bigger children. Eventually, he would learn that the best way to avoid these bullies and criminals was to be smarter than them. In his school courses, Mitnick always was at the top of his class, having a particular interest in technology and the matrix. At age 16, Mitnick dropped out of school, escaped the youth home and set off in search of the first UCAS military recruiter he could find. Three weeks later, Lennie Mitnick was enlisted in the UCAS army. He had chosen to become a technology specialist and shortly after completing basic training, he was sent to do just that. The beginning of Mitnick's military career was relatively boring, repairing commlinks, upgrading communications servers and satellites, and occasionally getting assigned a hacking mission or two. But this work bored Mitnick. All his years of fighting and surviving in the slums of Seattle prepared him for a life of action, and being a technomonkey for the Army didnt suit him. But rather than desert and give up, he did what he could on the base to make life more fun. It started out simply as sneaking around trying to avoid detection, or breaking into the officer's club to steal booze. As time went by, Mitnick realized he had skills not yet tapped by the military, or himself. His mischief slowly began to turn into snooping. Instead of simply trying to sneak past base security, he began to try hacking the command and control protocols for the base network. When doing so remotely failed, he focused on getting direct access to the base nexi. Inevitably, someone eventually caught on. In this case, someone was acutally a UCAS security spider working directly for the base commander. Mitnick was apprehended while hacking into the node of a sergeant who had mistreated him in an attempt to frame the sergeant for a string of rapes in the area. The base commander was furious at hearing these reports, but also surprised that someone as young as Mitnick (17 at the time) could have outsmarted so many layers of physical and network security. Instead of locking him up, the CO offered Mitnick a chance to satisfy his urge for adventure and utilize his particular skill sets at the same time by joining the UCAS Special Forces. Mitnick quickly agreed and was sent off for traning. As a special forces operator, Mitnick was trained in high tech security and countermeasures, as well as covert and stealth operations and tactics. As an operator, Mitnick excelled. His ability to covertly infiltrate enemy locations and wreak havoc on their internal operations, and to obtain valuable first hand intelligence was uncanny. In many situations, Mitnick was called upon to facilitate entire infiltration ops himself. Mitnick thought life couldnt get much better, when one day a man from Lone Star arrived and offered him an intriguing opportunity. Apparently, Lone Star had been actively recruiting from the top international military and intelligence services, building cells of operatives to be deployed in various major cities and states combating cyberterrorists and other nefarious criminal enterprises. They offered Mitnick a chance to become one of their field operatives and promised not only adventurous and challenging missions, but also a hefty private paycheck and Lone Star private citizen status. With the blessings of his Special Ops superiors, Mitnick left for Manhattan. One of his first operations involved infiltrating an Evo operations facility to obtain copies of files proving the corporations involvement with Yakuza overlords. Once inside, Mitnick made his way to the data center, where he cracked the Evo server and extracted the data he was sent to retrieve. He then injected a data bomb into the server to destroy the remaning data. As per his orders, Mitnick covered all traces of him at the center and exfiltrated. The next morning, Mitnick entered the safehouse and sat down at the table with his handler, Special Agent Thomas Locke. After making sure no one was listening, Mitnick produced the tiny encrypted data chip and handed it to Locke. Immediately, a team of Lone Star SWAT kicked in the safehouse door and took Mitnick into custody on charges of espionage and treason. Locke had used Mitnick to copy encrypted lists of the identities of undercover Lone Star assets, which he planned to sell to a Yakuza boss in exchange for a large sum of money. In fact, the Evo facility Mitnick infiltrated was in fact a Lone Star Intelligence Office, and Mitnicks theft and server destruction were classified as offenses against the state. He was tried and convicted in a closed session corporate hearing and sent immediately to prison. Due to his background and training, his escape took only a few months. After he broke out of prison, Lone Star registered his SIN as a fugitive, froze all of his accounts, and began to search for him. Once he made his way back to Seattle, Mitnick vowed to get revenge on Locke and those who helped to frame him. He then began a life in the shadows. Thanks to help from certain contacts he still had left from his military days, Mitnick was able to obtain a new identity and a carefully crafted set of new fingerprints. Under the name Charles Finley, Mitnick was able to set up bank accounts, register for housing, and even open a business. The tools of Mitnicks trade were highly restricted and in many cases illegal to posess, so he chose the only line of work he felt wouldnt draw attention: a security consultant. In addition to being the perfect cover for his line of work, his real life expertise in the area could actually lead to a meaningful source of income in his future on legitamate ops. After 2 years of laying low and carefully planning each detail, "Charles Finley" opened Vandalay Security, a full service security consulting company. According to the falsified business documents his forger friend helped him with, Vandalay were experts in assessing and testing physical and matrix security protocols and developing customized security solutions for clients in all areas of business. As the chief consultant, Finley also secured false licenses for any restricted items he would need while out on runs. As he carried out his business, Mitnick was very careful to keep Finley and Vandalay nothing but squeaky clean. When he did his dirty work, Mitnick always used other SINs and constantly sought to eliminate any trace to his own true identity.

It's a solid character: A bit like the old "combat decker" workup, but with greater potential due to the adept angle. I like it.

As for some knowledge skill ideas:

Security Systems (possibly specializing in electronic, or just generally in hardware: nice to know what you're up against, after all.)

Corp. Security Tactics (So that you'll know what sort of responses and behavior the enemy'll be likely to take.)

Digital Defense Architecture (Fancy, huh? Just a way of saying "computer programs used to make hackers' lives difficult." Nice way to get a bonus dice pool in a Scan test, or how to avoid tripping ICE, that sort of thing.)

Program Manufacturers (In RL the most common method of hacking a secure system is to make use of back doors left by the original programming team. Knowing who made what can help with this.)

[ICE?] Programmers (In the same vein. Which to use would depend as much on the GM as the actual skill itself -what's more likely to get you what you need, given how your GM reacts to such skill-use.)

Hacker Hangouts [Digital or meat, your choice] (always nice to talk shop with a group of like-minded individuals where you can pick up pointers and ware, right?)

As for using a fake SIN to overcome the Criminal SIN disadvantage: Being SINless means that a character has had (for whatever reason) his/her digital files removed from the government registry. This is what makes most 'runners so hard to track by law enforcement. Fake SINs might be useful for bluffing... until you bluff a machine, which will run your biometric data and find your original files (that is, your real SIN) when it queries the various official databases. At this point, having another SIN on you just becomes a liability... especially if you were trying to use it at the time.

At least, that's how I, as a GM, would have the situation go down. 2070's a time when electronic surveillance and monitoring is so ubiquitous in everyday life that there's no way to make a modern person intuit the invasiveness of the phenomenon (well, unless you've had the misfortune to work in a secure government facility. ugh.) But it's why SINs are a big deal. And why "criminal SIN" brings those precious extra BP.

What about if the biometrics were changed i.e. retinal upgrade and new fingerprints? The whole idea for the Finley identity was to create a new "legitimate" life for Mitnick, which would serve double duty as a cover for his shadowrunning operations. Vandalay Security would be a real company performing security consulting and all of the licenses and gear which Finley would use would be registred to it. If the prints were changed, even if he were questioned by Lone Star etc, their fingerprint or retinal scan would come back to Finley and the company, not Lennie Mitnick. Am I way off on this from a GMs perspective? These may seem to be innate details, but the group I am playing with get very heavily into RP so I wanted to have some questions answered before we begin.

BTW, thanks for the great info. One other question I had pertained to the Adept Power Improved Ability. The source book definition of the power is sort of confusing to me. What are the corresponding skill levels I would use to fully realize the benefits of this power? Also, given the info posted about this character (or any other hacker/infiltrator type characters), what are some different skills to enhance with this power?

Thanks again!

I would say in this case that you've moved from "criminal SIN" to "Records on file." Having the criminal SIN assumes that it can be connected with the character. Records on file would mean that there's info out there about you, but it's not the sort of thing that your average beat cop is going to be bringing up when he queries your ident.

As for IA, it depends on what you intend for the character: Will he fight more often, or will he try keep his battles in the digital realm? If the former, I'd improve Automatics. If he'll the latter, "Computer" is the most often used skill in my experience.

Btw, your initiative scores formula is given as: Initiative = 2+3+5 = 10

From what I can see though, it's: Reaction 4 + Intuition 5 (and I'm not certain where the 2 is coming from...) = 9

Thanks for the explanation on SINs. For the Improved Ability, what would the base score be to maximize the benefit of the power? I.E. - If I choose Hacking or Dodge to Improve, how does the maximum come into play (the book states something about 1.5 x base score). So does this mean that I cannot use the power if I have a skill at level 4 or 5?

In terms of character background, given what you told me about the SIN vs Records on File situation, I think it would make more sense to somehow have Mitnick have faked his death after escaping from prison and returning to Seattle. Once there, he managed to connect with a fixer he once worked with who had connections to Renraku and the Yakuza. The fixer connected Mitnick with a master forger who established the Finley identity and Vandalay Security Company, registered him as an agent/citizen of the Renraku corp, and changed Mitnicks biometric signatures (prints and retina). Essentially, he was given a whole new life in exchange for Finley's specialized service on shadowruns and other Yakuza business in the future (of course using vandalay as cover). With this in mind, I plan to swap out SIN for another negative quality. Would records on file fit this description or would any other qualities fit better?

Again, sorry for the noobish questions, I really appreciate all the advice.

Actually, your questions are well taken: I've asked them myself, in regards to a SIN vs Records. At the moment, I'm leaning in terms of Records for the answer to what you've asked. It serves to represent that your name is negative in amongst those with contact to your past, yet you're not hung with an albatross as is the case with a SIN.

Hope that helps.
