Who said running the shadows was easy? Dodging bullets, swords, spirits, and spells just to name a few. Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, even the occasional Dragon can make any Shadowrun go bad.

The One-Man Running Team: A Thought Experiment Empty

!!!DISCLAIMER!!!
This is a theoretical thought experiment. I have no intention of playing the product of this character concept in an actual game. I just thought it would be fun to see just how far I could push the Build Point system. If I find out you're actually playing such a character, I will track you down and break your fingers for being a complete and utter slot.
!!!END DISCLAIMER!!!

Okay, with that out of the way, I present: the One-Man Running Team! I was thinking today about magic and how an Awakened character might be built into a hacker. Then it hit me: with the right implants, high conjuration skill, and the ability to suck down enough drain, a possession tradition mage might be able to combine the roles of Rigger, Hitter, Hacker, Thief, Mage, Face, and Doctor all in a single munchkiny body and do them all well. That's key: I'm not talking about doing a mediocre job at many things, that's easy. I'm talking about a 400 BP character actually being a minmaxed bulldozer in every role.

Rules: 400 BP, no gear above 12 Availability.

Now, what I'm thinking so far is to be a Possession mage who's very good at summoning and binding high-force Task Spirits, effectively allowing him access to all the Technical and Physical skills, albeit only two or three at a time unless he summons them into vessels (though I don't really like that idea because it has flavors of that icky "teamwork" thing; true munchkins don't need none o' that drek). Combat Specialist should be just a matter of getting possessed by a Guardian Spirit. Matrix stuff is tricky, though an implanted commlink should allow us to boost matrix IPs to 5 passes.

Social rolls are an obvious solution for the discerning munchkin: abuse the Emotitoys like no tomorrow.

Now, the trouble I run into is with Physical Initiative, though there is the idea of taking the spell Improved Reflexes and having a Spirit of Man sustaining it all the time. That, however, seems a problematic solution at best. A Sustaining Focus could work, but that has its problems too, among them the availability limitation.

Maybe a Mystic Adept? But that would lower our magic, making it difficult to bind powerful spirits.

Rigger can be fulfilled by stuffing a possession spirit into the vehicle, but I would prefer a more elegant solution. I suppose we could just take the skills, but that depends on if we can afford the BP, which leads to the question of if all of this will fit in a 400 BP character.

Anyways, that's where I am with it now. Suggestions, guys?

You are better off with a pornomancer with halfway decent combat skills squeezed in as the ultimate one man runner. Maybe even go unarmed so you can eventually build up critical strike with karma. Though the uber possession mage is actually possible, it would take a fair amount of time to become viable in all roles. With 400 bp, you will be mediocre across the board at best, useless at worst.

What about hacking? And rigging? And infiltration? While a pornomancer is a powerful face and fairly effective at combat, it can't really do those things at the same time, right?
By comparison, a possession mage could bind six force 6 task spirits and still have a force 10 summon, giving him 12 physical and technical skills of his choice and another summon with 3 optional powers, which can be skills as well if necessary. The 12 bound spirits will have 12 dice for their skills, while the summon would have 20 dice, and can be varied according to the situation.

EDIT: Just realized that possession limits physical attributes to racial maximums, so some skills would only have a pool of 16. Also, possessed vessels apparently cannot use matrix stuff, which means we'll need to actually have those skills naturally.

ork(20) stats all at 4(190) go with Magician(15) maxed out Magic(65) with skillwires r3 .6ess? (2)
sorcery skill group r4 (40) conjuring r4 (40) you still have 65 points to playwith.

Restricted gear (5bp) gets you skillwire rating 5, and each skill costs (rating *2)build points

I've done a great deal of researching the books in the past over this and haven't ever found that to be the case. I say this because in possession, it states nowhere that such is the case. Pg 102 sidebar of Street Magic states that the spirits force is added to the living/unliving vessels physical attributes. Nowhere in the entire possession description or elsewhere does it suggest Augmented Racial Maximum's are kept in mind for either living or nonliving vessels.

This use of physical attributes plus spirit force is an inherent bonus and negative to the possession tradition, because first the spirit must succeed at possession as well as uses up one service as well as rely on the vessels attributes whether it's an athlete or an immobile and fragile champaign flute. Thankfully if successful the service can be combined with a directive. A possession spirit replaces Materialization with Possession. Materialization uses a set of base attributes modified by force which have no augmented maximums. A Possession spirit uses the base attributes of the vessel which have no augmented maximums.

Page 86 Living Vessels also states that the living vessels attributes are increased as well, no mention of augmented maximums.

Additionally, not an obvious con initially, but a living vessels is also subject to "Attacks of Will." Damage done to the spirit is done to the Living Vessel equally.

Nowhere does the rulebooks state an attribute bonus increase without also stating that augmented maximum is considered as well; the exception is for spirit attributes.

That would be because it was an errata that Catalyst did not print but did put in the FAQ on their site. Razz
