Who said running the shadows was easy? Dodging bullets, swords, spirits, and spells just to name a few. Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, even the occasional Dragon can make any Shadowrun go bad.

PostSubject: First Commlink   Fri Jul 30, 2010 10:15 pm

Im building a character who is going to be a Hacker Adept / B&E-infiltration stealthy guy. Our Gm is restricting us to solely the core rulebook, so nothing from unwired can be used. Im a bit confused as to the rules for commlinks. First, our game is going on 500 BP, so i have more than enough BP and Nuyen left over to buy whatever I need. My question involves my chars commlink. I plan to have his "real" commlink implanted, but in the core book, there are only a few options to buy. On these "stock" commlinks, the stats are relatively low. The book says that in order to upgrade the commlink, i would need to buy or program the correct hardware/software module, then simply install it. Does this mean that at character creation, I cannot upgrade anything on the commlink or OS? Or can I spend the nuyen as if to buy same, and start the game with a crazy badass commlink in me?

Also, im not clear on what benefit skinlink provides. Can ne one help me on that?

Unless your gm is forbidding the upgrade, yes you can upgrade your commlink at character creation and have a bad ass commlink, just be aware of all of the commlink rules.

As for skin link, imagine being able to simply touch a machine to use it, anything from a gun, to a car, a computer, a coffee machine. Typing literally at the speed of thought without ever having to move your fingers, or body for that matter. It's telepathy for machines basically.

if your GM allowed the Runner's Companion Quality Restricted Gear 5 BP it will allow you to have a Response of 6, which means you can have and use programs of rating 6. All features in a Comm Link Signal, Response, FireWall, etc can be upgrade by the SR4A/SR4 books. SR4A page 222.

thanks for the clarification. im still waiting for permission from my gm to use restricted gear, but im working out the stats as if i had it.

So without posting any other stats at the moment, the main commlink setup thus far is this:

Implanted Transys Avalon (Response 4 / Signal 4) = $5000 + $2000 (implant cost) = $7000
OS= Novatech Navi (Firewall 3 / System 4) = $1500
Skinlink = $50, Implanted Sim Module w/ Hot Sim mod = $5000, Implanted Control Rig = $10000

Subtotal 23,550 Nuyen

I then plan to upgrade to a rating 6 response module ($8000) and plan to keep the stock signal of 4 for now. I want to also upgrade the OS stats (especially the firewall), but in the core book on page 228 the only way i found to do this software upgrade was to code my own with a threshold of ratingx2. Is there any way to buy this software upgrade package or must i make the software rolls? I am looking for clarification because I also saw on page 232 of SR4 (matrix programs) there is a table which lists a rate for system and firewall programs at rating x $500. Is this the purchase price?

If purchasing them is not possible, i have another question involving the interval. Per the book, the interval for programming a firewall package is 3 months. Does this mean that is how long it will take? If so, how does three months translate in game time?

Thanks in Advance !

I doubt the skinlink is necessary: simply having the comm implanted means that you should be able to use it at will.

yes there would be no need to have a skinlink if it is implanted

that makes sense, i just figured from the descriptors in the book that skinlink would somehow immunize the data transmissions to my braincomm from signals and such. either way though, can i simply BUY the firewall and system programs at character creation or must i code the software in game?

No, it looks perfectly legit. I honestly don't see how it couldn't get approved... you've not stepped over any sort of limit that's usual at chargen. Exactly what sort of software is it that you're thinking you'd need to code?

Oh, and I see the confusion on the skinlink: the way it prevents eavesdroppers from scanning into a signal is by removing the gap between the source of said signal and the point of it's arrival. Most signals are radio waves: they travel between yourself and whatever device you're communicating with. Even if that device is only a few feet (or even a few inches) from you, the radio wave is out there... and can be intercepted. By using a skinlink, you send a signal through your own flesh, through direct, physical contact with the device, and the signal cannot be intercepted because it never moves beyond your own body (the source of the signal) and the machine (it's destination.)

Since your commlink is internal, any signal between you and it never has to go through any medium save your own body anyway... a skinlink would be superfluous.

I hope that helped clear it up a bit.

An implanted Comm link uses a DNI (Direct Neural Interface) along with other devices that do the same.

But a skin link is useful for other devices that you may want to connect to the comm link with out using the wireless connection IIRC you need two skin links one for the device (smartgun link) and one for the commlink. Since the comm link has hot sim module it will peform the AR for the smartgun link.

Generally upgrading the various components/software of a commlink is allowed to be done pregame ie

SR4A page 222 give the costs for Response and Signal with the limitation of availability of 12 which means you can upgrade response to a 5 and signal to a 5 with out the use of restricted gear quality from Runners Companion.

Upgrading costs for System/Firewall are on SR4A 330, but System is functionally limited to the rating of Response typically a 5, you can buy it at 6 but only use it at rating 5. Firewall can be bought up to rating 6.

The interval for building/coding your own software is what is stated in SR4A page 238.

Also the Build/Repair Table on SR4A 138.

So as in your request coding a upgrade to Firewall would be extended test Logic + skill(Software/or Electronics). Extended Tests on SR4A page 64 shows how it goes. Generally coding software takes multiple intervals of months..Rating 6 FireWall is a target of 12 so you need a total of 12 successes to code that software. If you had a logic of 6 and a skill of software specialized in Firewalls? that would give you total of 14 dice average number of successes is 4 so it would take you 3 months times 3 or total of 9 months.
