Who said running the shadows was easy? Dodging bullets, swords, spirits, and spells just to name a few. Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, even the occasional Dragon can make any Shadowrun go bad.

I don't have the book these are discussed in and I cannot find any info anywhere.

Can anyone explain what the maneuver "Focus Will" does exactly, please? I am assuming based on a comment on another thread that it adds to Willpower Tests, but is that to any teast or just certain tests?

The rules for martial arts styles and maneuvers are found in the Arsenal sourcebook.

Arsenal pg. 159 wrote:
Focus Will
By taking a Complex Action to focus their chi, characters gain a +2 dice pool modifier to any Willpower Tests they must make by the end of their next Action Phase. If not used by the time the character’s next Action Phase is over, the modifier is lost.
And yes, it can be used for all Willpower Tests, including Drain tests and Attacks of Will. I bet it could also be used for Composure and Addiction tests, as well as things like Mentor Spirit disadvantage tests. Sounds really cheap, right?

Focus Will is a martial arts maneuver. In order to learn maneuvers, you must learn a style. Styles can be taken at CG for 5 BP per level; more levels allow for more benefits from a style and more maneuvers. A character may learn up to two maneuvers per level of Martial Arts at the cost of 2 BP each. A character can also learn styles and maneuvers during gameplay.

As for the styles, they are also found in Arsenal. If you have a specific character concept in mind, I could offer a few suggestions if you don't own the book. For example, if you are making a mage, you might want to consider taking Capoeira or Ninjutsu for an additional Gymnastics Dodge die or Aikido for an additional Full Dodge die. Ninjutsu could also supply a dice pool bonus for Infiltration tests. Pentjak-Silat can also give you +1 DV for Astral Combat attacks. As for maneuvers, Watchful Guard would also be useful:

Arsenal pg. 160 wrote:
Watchful Guard
Characters using the Watchful Guard maneuver reduce the penalty for “defender has defended against previous attacks” (see p. 150, SR4) by 1 (meaning they can defend against two attacks between actions without penalty).
So, you would take Martial Arts 1 (Style of Choice) for 5 BP that counts towards the 35 BP quality limit. You would then take the Focus Will and Watchful Guard maneuvers for 4 BP that does not count towards the 35 BP quality limit, for a total of 9 BP.

Thanks.
So, if I take a style and then take Focus Will it will cost me 7 bps: giving me the equivalent of Focus Concentration 2 but at far fewer bps?

If you don't mind taking a complex action, than, yeah, it's pretty much awesome.

But, if you casting spells outside of a combat situation when you have all the time in the world, then a complex action is meaningless, no?

Some GMs might rule that martial arts maneuvers only work while in physical combat, which does make some sense. Yes, many martial arts practitioners like to stress how the discipline learned from a martial art benefits our lives in more ways than you expect, but taking a moment to focus your chi probably shouldn't let you resist dumpshock.
