Who said running the shadows was easy? Dodging bullets, swords, spirits, and spells just to name a few. Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, even the occasional Dragon can make any Shadowrun go bad.

Background
Dakota's parents knew early on that their only son was not destined to be like the other kids around the small rural town of White's City, New Mexico. Instead of racking up high-scores on the tired video games down at the Burger Barn or hoverboarding past the shop-fronts along Main Street, Dakota could most often be found - if found at all - exploring the foothills and valleys that were the beginnings of the Rocky Mountains; especially the caverns.
Since his first encounter with the 'realm of underground' quite by accident - a baseball had disappeared down what was first thought to be nothing but a gopher hole, but had turned out to be several hundred yards of rocky caverns after some initial digging - Dakota embarked upon what was to become his lifelong romance with all things buried underground or forgotten in ancient ruins. But although he would gladly have devoted all his time to the physical exploration of the underworld, he lacked the same devotion to furthering the knowledge base of archaeology in the interests of university scholars or society at large. Dakota cared only to explore solely for the sheer delight of personal discovery, which expanded into personal financial gain as he grew older and learned he could turn a sizeable buck selling artifacts on the black market.
Now, at 25, though mostly unknown among the popular 'diggers' and archaeologists, Dakota Jones still finds adventure running the shadows below.

Do you really need a rating 5 commlink if you are only running rating 3 programs and have no matrix-related skills? You should probably run with a rating 3 commlink with a Pocket Hacker from Unwired. Give it some autosofts and you're golden.

Novatech Airware Commlink [1250]
+Commlink Optimization (Analyze) [500]
+Customized Interface [250]
+Directional Antenna R6 [150]
+Personality Software (Max Headnode) [100] Razz
+Skinlink [50]
Iris Orb OS [1000]
+Pocket Hacker Program Package [4920]
+Homeground Autosoft R3 [1500]
+Adaptability Autosoft R3 [1500]
+Basic User+ Program Package [400]
Total Cost: 11620, just over 2 BP

What you get: Your unrestricted Agent runs autonomously at a high functioning level. He will competently perform security on your own commlink and can also tackle some low-level nodes that you might come across. You won't have to worry too much about being hacked, but you might consider investing in a decent Encryption program and maybe even a Data Bomb.

whoa, got some reading to do

I found most of that list. haven't found the personality software or the basic user+ package, but still looking.

I didn't give the commlink as much consideration as I should have. you've given me a good bit of food for thought, PP, thanks!

Basic+ is in the matrix section of the corebook, but not in the street gear section. Personality Software is in Unwired and is basically useless fluff. But Max Headroom (Max Headnode in the book to avoid copyright issues) is hilarious, and if your commlink is basically a dedicated agent, it might as well be fully integrated.
