Who said running the shadows was easy? Dodging bullets, swords, spirits, and spells just to name a few. Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, even the occasional Dragon can make any Shadowrun go bad.

PostSubject: Cyberguy for Twinkle -- Suggestions Wanted   Fri May 11, 2012 8:31 am

Hey gang, I'm working on a sammie/merc for our Twinkle game. I am asking for suggestions to make him a good unarmed/firearms expert.
I have one major question about Restricted Gear: can it be used for cyberware as well as gear?

Any other advice is extremely welcome!

Typically you're not permitted to have two standard attributes at max on build; only one. Kesslan can comment on whether he is willing to overrule that for a 600BP build or not. Whether it's allowed, though, is not terribly relevant: I am of the opinion that except in cases of Magic or Edge, it's not typically a good use of build points. I suggest saving those 50 BP (25 on Agility and 25 on Strength), and use them elsewhere.
You have Reaction listed as 5(10) - not sure where that came from, but it's not possible. Augmented Maximum for a human is 9, without taking Exceptional Attribute. So you can't go over 9. Also, there's the unfortunate wording in most Reflex Enhancements in the game which specifically disallow stacking Reaction Enhancements. What that means is that your realistic cap for Reaction is +3 (or less, depending on your Reflex Enhancement).
Also you have enhancements to Str. and Agi. listed as well; and I don't see where those come from. I will address some suggestions for those later in this response though.

Yes, restricted gear works for Gear or Cyber/Bioware. But, as stated in the description, it's use is limited to one item at a time. I like that you chose the HK-Suitcase. That's an awesome toy!

You have Pistols at 4, and Automatics at 5 for a sum of 36. For 50, you can have Firearms at 5. The increased cost is hardly worth the notice when compared to the increase in versatility. You can still apply your specializations beyond that. So, 54 would give you 7 in Assault Rifles, and 7 in Heavy Pistols.

If you're willing to splurge on Betaware Wired Reflexes for 200K; why not go with the Bioware Synaptic Booster for 240K. It's much lighter on the Essense Cost, and only slightly heavier on the wallet. If you save the 50BP on Agility and Strength, that extra 40K is easy to come by.
While we're on the Bioware Roller-Coaster: Take a look at Muscle Toner and Muscle Augmentation. Both are excellent uses of funds, and cost slightly less than the BP cost for the Attribute. With Muscle Toner coming in at 7K and Muscle Toner at 8K, they are approximately 1.5 BP per point, versus 10BP per point for natural. And since you can gain +4 from each, you only need natural at 5 for each anyway; putting you at your Augmented Max of 9.
Also, the lesser of Bioware/Cyberware in your body is only counted for half. So if you switch your heavy-Essense-use in to Bioware, your Cyberware only counts for half against your Essense use, thereby increasing your available enhancements! So, the above suggestions improve your available options for future enhancement!

Thanks Gala! I always miss the half Essence for mixing bio- and cyberware! As for stacking reaction enhancers and wired reflexes, the description for wired reflexes in SR4A does state that the two can be combined.

Again, thanks for the input!

Yes, the stacking cost-save is potentially a major save for Cyberware and Bioware.

As for the stacking of Reaction enhancements and Wired Reflexes: You are right! But, it is specific. It states, in capitalized words, that it may only be stacked with Reaction Enhancers, which is a cyberware. Perhaps you are intending to add that? It's not listed yet. And you still can't get to 10; all enhancements are limited by your Racial Augmented Maximum - which is 9, unless you take Exceptional Attribute.

As this pertains to Synaptic Boosters: I just re-read the description, and there is not actually a limitation on Reaction enhacements (though the standard limitation of Initiative Enhancements is still there); so it looks like the Bioware version can be stacked as well! Score!!
Synaptic Boosters, at 240K, only come out at 1.5 Essense loss, which is a clear winner. Also, Bioware can be made with the various grades as well, so you could, potentially, purchase Synaptic Boosters that are Deltaware, coming in at only .75 Essense. Though, that would end up costing 2.4 Million Nuyen, so it's a little out of reach for the standard 'Runner's budget... Also, Synaptic Boosters are expensive enough that attempting to come up with the money for a higher grade is quite cost prohibitive (480K just for Alpha)...

Oh, and one last suggestion: You should add some Chrome in there somewhere. Like an obvious Cyberhand, or something. There's nothing like some shiny Chrome to really build a character concept around!

yeah, I know my listed stats are off, that's part of the reason for this thread. sometimes I get frustrated when creating a character as I either forget/miss vital creation info or wind up having to reread almost the entire core book again and again Razz

yes, the reaction enhancers are intended but I'm still limited to an augmented max of 9. the synaptic booster would be a good way to go also but as you pointed out may not be as cost effective in the long run.

I'm basically trying to create a hand-to-hand/firearms expert who is insanely fast as opposed to brickhouse tough.

yeah, I thought about giving him cyberhands for both the look and added damage value Very Happy

Cool! I'm glad you posted this, I LOVE Character Creation; it's by far my favorite part of SR. In my table-top game, I do about 80% of my group's characters, for no other reason than that I really enjoy it, and they are all more than willing to let me enjoy it.

Synaptic Booster is most definitely cost effective (I said an Alpha Synaptic Booster isn't - regular one definitely is!). And if you're considering a Betaware Wired Reflexes, it is more than cost effective, it is almost silly to go with the Cyber instead. The 40K Nuyen extra cost for the Synaptic Booster is more than made up for in the 2.0 Essense Save between them (no, I did not put that decimal in the wrong place).
In addition to the Synaptic Booster, I typically go for the Muscle Toner and Muscle Augmentation as well. As I stated in my first post, it's a far better use of your BP resources than spending the 25BP for that 6th point on Agi or Str (or both!). For a magic user, that's not really an option, but for a cybered character, that max-attribute is just too expensive to be worth the cost. Unless it's Intuition, or Edge. The other Attributes can all be augmented (except Charisma directly; but it's got a lot of indirect augmentation available). Intuition or Edge, however, need to be raised as high as you're interested in them being on Build, since they can't be augmented.
But yeah: go for Synaptic Booster. For a 600BP character I would consider it a no-brainer. And even for 400BP characters, I sometimes find it difficult to go in a different direction. The Essense save is just so huge...
Also look in to some of the following other Bioware enhancements which are really useful: Adrenaline Pump, Enhanced Articulation (this allows you to save another 10BP per affected attribute; could add up to some big saves!), Suprathyroid Gland (another 10BP per attribute...), Platelet Factories (-1 for all damage; not bad!), Reflex Recorder (+1 to any one skill - not bad!).
Carefully including some or all of the above bioware can significantly reduce your Attribute build costs, and allow you to apply those extra points to skills. As a front-line character, more skills is often better (think Athletics, Stealth, Outdoors, Pilot, etc.)!

Another possible major benefit of Cyberware: If you take an Obvious Cyber-Torso, and max out it's strength, body, agility, reaction, and armor, it can turn out to be a massive improvement for nearly any circumstance. And it's shiny, and chrome. And chrome is cool!

What kind of "insanely fast" are you talking about?
- If you take SURGE, you can add Celerity or Satyr Legs as a SURGE positive quality (or both!), which will allow you to run even faster.
- If you have obvious cyber-legs, you can take Hydraulic Jacks which would allow you to jump really far. Jumping is fast...
After all: getting to the enemy quickly is most definitely an effective way of stopping them from shooting at you!

I was thinking insanely fast as in high initiative and multiple passes, which are both limited by rules now that I think about it, but you bring up another good point: getting to an opponent while potentially under fire.
I wasn't going with SURGE as that was Spawn's build, but good scores in Running with a specialization in Sprinting would work as well (?)

I'm trying to avoid that old "aw man, if I had gotten..." or "aw man, if I'd put more BP in..." scenarios in gameplay. I realize I can't create a character who's built for every eventuality, but I'd like to maximize my attributes vs skills vs bio/cyberware. I figure a 600 BP character would be much more streamlined than a 400.

can turn a single soldier into a one-man army. The baseline assault rifle
features lightweight composite construction, a smartgun system, rigid

taking an Automatics + Agility (5, 1 minute) Extended Test to swap

Muay Thai (Kickboxing, Savate)
This Thai martial art is often referred to as Thai Boxing because
of how closely Muay Thai tournaments are styled after professional
boxing matches. Muay Thai began as part of the Thai military’s
standard training regimen. As time progressed, it flowered into a
national pastime. Since the early 2030s, Thai Boxing has been an
international sport on par with traditional boxing. Unlike boxing,
Muay Thai uses legs, knees, and elbows as weapons, emphasizing
swift, brutal kicks and knee strikes. The martial art is well known
for its brutality, and is a staple of illegal pit fights.

Looking nice! Love the cyber hands!!

Notes:
Synaptic Booster will account for one of your Restricted Gear uses (or the free one...) - just to keep track.
You have Firearms and Longarms. Don't double-pay!!
Savate isn't actually a specialization of Unarmed; it replaces it.
Attacking with the cyberspur requires a specialization of Unarmed skill, not Blades (this will save you some points!).

Further Suggestions:
Pump Reaction back up to 5 (if you can afford it).
Spend some nuyen on Armor for the Cyberhands; can increase it to +4 Armor, which contributes to overall AC (though not totally - I'll find the rules some other day).
Take Shock-Hands in your Cyberhands. AWESOME enhancement!
Bioware:
+ Enhanced Articulation (40K; +1 to all physical skills linked to physical abilities = i.e. Guns, melee, stealth, athletics)
+ Reflex Recorder Skill Group (25K; +1 to skill group applied to - suggest Firearms)
+ Bone Density Augmentation R4 (St/2+3 DV for only 16BP - Big payout! Further benefit, no limitation on Availability and stackable with Savate)
+ If you have spare availability: pump up Muscle Toner and Muscle Augmentation to R4 for both (yes, these are limited availability; so keep an eye on other availability-limited stuff too).
+ Before the above: If you have spare availability, take Suprathyroid Gland (+1 to all physical attributes; NICE)
Skills:
You can still take your Specializations on top of a skillgroup. Take the +2 Heavy Pistols. Take the +2 Shotguns.
Consider also taking Throwing Weapons. Useful for grenades and the like.
Might want Stealth; or at least Shadowing and Infiltration (slight save if you only go for the movement skills - but pickpocketing is fun too!). Staying alive is easier if they can't see you!

It sounds like you're enjoying this, Gala!
Want to design the guy for me?
Razz

It sure sounds like a lot of BP, even for a 600 build cap.

I goofed on listing Longarms and Firearms Group, I originally had Heavy Weapons but decided against it. I want the guy to be able to stay mobile and heavy weapons are bulky and unwieldy at best. I just replaced Heavy Weapons with Longarms without thinking.

Nicely done! I really like how it's shaping up!!

Couple of notes:

As an Elf, your total cost now for Attributes is 240. I just did a quick in-the-head calculation for your character, and it looks like you're running in the 550 range (you should definitely check my math; it is certainly not an official calculation!). You have plenty of build points left to spend!

Alternate options on how to put this one together:
Make it as an Orc, rather than an Elf.
+ Take Exceptional Attribute Agility
The reason for the above suggestion is two fold: An Orc with 6 Agility is an exceptional character - it gives you improved coolness factor. It will cost 15 BP more to do it this way, but the extra coolness I think is worth the cost. Also, the higher strength is a HUGE gain, considering how much damage this build is set up to do: str/2+3+2=str/2+5 is base unarmed damage for this character. That's incredible! So support that with a character who comes to the table with a lot of strength. An Orc with 30 BP in Strength, and this build, will end up with 11 Strength. Which means your character would do 11 damage per punch!!!

I see you took the Enhanced Articulation: Good call!! Remember to add it on to the skills section once the character has been improved. It gives a +1 to all physical skills which are connected to physical abilities. That means +1 Firearms, +1 Infiltration, +1 Dodge, +1 Savate, +1 Driving (did I miss anything?).
Good call on the Reflex Recorder for the skill-group! It's an awesome enhancement. Remember to add this on to the skills section once the character has been approved. It's +1 to Firearms.

Finally: take a look through Augmentation. There is some stuff in there which can be combined with Dermal Sheath for some really neat affects. I don't remember what pages or what the details were, but I'm pretty sure you'll like what you find.

I will edit with more comments later. First pass: Max Agility is still 9, not 10. Save the 25 BP, and use them somewhere else. The +4 Muscle Toner is cheaper than the 6th Natural Agility; and the cap is 9 either way.

Interesting choice going with the Bone Lacing rather than the Bone Density. Is there really a cost save by going with Beta Bone Lacing over standard Bone Density? How about when you consider the Essense?

I like the Mossberg! It's a sweet weapon!
Remember when using it: Often it's still a win when you're dealing with the +5AP (though not always) since it takes an average of 3 Armor to deal with 1 damage... Do the math and Flachette is often still a gain.

Ok, I guess I see why you threw those extra points in to Agility. But take them out. Max is 9; so that extra natural point is wasted BP. Put it in to Intuition instead.

I calculated, and re-calculated, and I get your total at 592 (I calculate your Abilities at 325, not 300). Go ahead and re-run the numbers, but I think you have another 8 BP to throw around. Here are my suggestions:
1. Move the Agility Natural Max to Intuition. Doesn't change your total costs, but you can't get to Augmented Agility 10 as an Orc; Augmented Max is 9.
2. Find some money for a lifestyle. This character is FAR TOO VALUABLE to be able to survive in a "Street" lifestyle (and honestly, probably even a "Low" lifestyle). He would be attacked every single night for his 'ware. And your remaining 8BP is more than enough.
3. You'll need sound suppressors. Earbugs are fine. Cyberears are better, but more expensive.
4. Where did the cyberhands go? Chrome is awesome...!
5. Get another contact, or two. 8 Points can buy a 4/4 contact. Or a 3/5 contact. Both can be extremely useful.
6. Put some Ammo on your sheet. You don't need much, as most jobs will pay a small portion up-front for exactly that reason ('Runner's are not known for being "cash rich" at any given point in time...). You need at least 1 full clip for each of your weapons.

Obviously you can't do all of the above. I listed them in order of priority, from my perspective. Finding a little extra cash is easy enough. Ask Kesslan permission to go over the 500K Cap. If he says no, you can convert some of your Beta 'Ware in to Standard 'Ware. The loss won't be huge... Alternatively, you could take Debt to get more money. I like that you have no negative qualities; but if you can't part with your 'Ware, and Kesslan won't Ok going over the cap, then you do what you must. Also note: Getting Eyes and Ears implanted post-build isn't terribly difficult.

So, I know that I haven't made your finishing touches much easier. But hopefully I've helped you clarify your next steps?

You have been most helpful, Gala, and I thank you sincerely for your efforts!
cheers

I was actually just working on replacing the cyberhands, but from what I am reading in SR4A, an obvious cyberhand only has a capacity of 4 which really limits what enhancements/weapons it can carry: Armor takes up 2 capacity for each point (unless I'm misreading that,) and shock hands is 3 capacity points.

I fixed the Agility attribute to 5 (9) and will recalculate my total also.

I have not submitted my rough draft to Kesslan as of yet, but perhaps I should do so and get some feedback from him.
Very Happy
