Who said running the shadows was easy? Dodging bullets, swords, spirits, and spells just to name a few. Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, even the occasional Dragon can make any Shadowrun go bad.

PostSubject: Cyber yo-yo weapon   Sat Sep 04, 2010 7:03 pm

I'd like to make a yo-yo that is fitted to act as a weapon with protruding spikes and a monofilament string.
Here's some ideas I have for it:

1. Smartgun system w/skinlink allows spikes to protrude while airborne or hacked when held so the hand doesn't get sliced up (or possibly to trigger remote explosions?).
2. Fingertip compartment holding monofilament whip.
3. Finger and knuckle gloves with a material that can withstand monofilament.

Now for the questions:

1. Would a yo-yo use Exotic Melee Skill like a monofilament whip or Throwing Skill?
2. Are their any materials that can withstand monofilament?
3. Do I have to use the smartgun system to allow the spikes to protrude wirelessly? Is their something more cost effective that could still incorporate a skinlink? I'd especially like one that doesn't come with that danged R tag.
4. Can an Advanced Safety be applied to a cyberhand or is there an equal hardware accessory that can be applied?
4. How much would all this cost?

And, if I really had to (Evil or Very Mad), I could just have separate performance and combat yo-yos and maybe even some cheap asplodable ones.

Some gear considerations:

Fingertip Compartment: Essence: 0.1 or Capacity: [1]; Availability: 4; Price: 750¥

Cybereyes (image link standard): Essence: 0.2-0.5; Capacity 4-16; Availability: 0-8; Price: 500-1500¥
+Smartlink: Capacity: [3]; Availabilty: 8R; Price: 1000¥
^Total: Essence: 0.2-0.5; Availability 8R; Price: 1500-2500¥
or
Image Link: Essence: 0.1; Availability: 4; Price: 500¥
+Smartlink: Essence: 0.1; Availabilty: 8R; Price: 1000¥
^Total: Essence: 0.2; Availabilty: 8R; Price: 1500¥
(Cybereyes seems to be the obvious choice here. Free image link and no essence loss from smartlink means equal essence and an additional space of capacity even at rating one, at the same cost .)

Monoflament Whip: Reach: 2 Damage: 8P AP: –4 Availability: 12F Price: 3,000¥

Shuriken: Damage: (STR/2)P; Availability: 2; Price: 30¥
or
Cougar Fineblade Knife (Short Blade): Damage: (STR/2+1)P; AP: -1; Availability: 5R; Cost: 550¥
(I believe you could implement Fineblade technology in a yo-yo with a decent concealment modifier)

EDIT: After realizing the true nature of monofilament (i.e. not just very sharp), using monofilament for a performance yo-yo would not only heavily restrict tricks (you'd lose a finger or two with a cat's cradle unless they were armored), it would also not look very cool, just a spinning disk moving around. The string really makes it magical. Thus, I could downgrade to razor wire with armored gloves/plated cyberhands or just have performance yo-yos.
So the performance options are plated cyberhands or heavy armored but flexible gloves (do these even exist?) with a razorwire string which could double as a weapon or just string, significantly lowering cost which could be put to better use for a weapon use.

I like the craziness of the concept. This all depends on GM approval.

You make a mini "yo-yo" drone, with a skinlink, Command prog, and safety chip installed in your hand, you could have the pilot prog in the drone extend & retract the blades depending on its distance from the safety chip.

You wouldn't actually need skinlink, but it would allow you to not have the drone acting wirelessly, thus you have an added buffer between your deadly drone cutting up your enemies, and not you.

The only foreseeable issue, is that when the Yo-yo drone hits a target, it will stop spinning, and in-bed itself.

I assume you want to use a mono-filament string to use like the mono-whip? That's pretty dangerous, and Most likely a GM would require you get an exotic weapon skill for it, if not two (one for use as a yo-yo & the other for use as a whip/chain).

I don't think you will find any "material" that is resistant to a mono-filament wire. The point is that it is 1 molecule thick. So, anything bigger than a molecule get's cut.

Monofilament is not a Force Field Reinforced Blade of Sci Fi. That sci fi weapon is referred too as the Monomolecular String or Variable Sword with a Force Field keeping the string of monomolecules rigid.

Any dense material/object will stop or slow it.

It is a very sharp edged weapon, it will not cut thru most heavy or medium metals ie. Even Monofilament has a tensile strength, once that is exceeded that tensile strength it breaks.

A yo yo not matter what enhancements would still be a exotic weapon skill to use.

I bow before your superior knowledge of the subject. Laughing It is about the thickness of a single celled organism. So, anything bigger than that, it will theoretically cut through if there is enough force driving it... excluding the force needed to break it.
